Land of Kings

I feel suffocated, In this land, Of famine & floods Land of Lords and Kings. Farmer is in debt, Feeding all but he is dead. Will you pay his debt? This thought makes me dread. Our King brags of welfare. Bringing sons of soil to warfare. At King’s command, the trumpet blows. He shields the fat cats with vows. ‘Food & shelter for all’! his cronies cry in chorus. Flies & mice served to calm bourgeois. Little guy celebrates end of his reign. A con man comes to play the same game.

Daughters day

I do not hold a rosary, Nor my lips repeat, Hymns or holy verses. Yet my heart beats, With a billion wishes. For my daughters, Not on one, but everyday.

Yet Another Day

Yet Another Day, With a broken promise. I make to myself each night. I live a vagabond life, Tip toe walking like a squirrel, On the wired network. This makes me asocial. Browsing the people or lives? Recollecting nothing, Forgetting everything.  I cross out on calendar, With dwindled spark. Yet Another Day, With a broken promise.

TEACHERS' DAY

I was a teacher, Not by choice  but chance. A story I won’t enhance. Slowly, I got the hang of a Black board & chalk. Like falling snowflakes, my hair would dance, With the lessons & Classroom talk. Gradually, I picked up white board & marker. Vibrant colors colored me & the board. With fables new & old. Hesitantly, I turned on the smart board. Blurred I was, switching windows and pressing keys. Sang-through believing it to be the bottom most. Implausibly, we sailed online. We assembled the school campus on Zoom & Teams. Connect fast! The corridor echoes on what’s app! Teachers are off meeting students online. Can we be off to working online? With hope, we will exchange the greetings offline.                                    Shehnaz Gujral
